11/18/17: CHRISTMAS IN OZ WORLD PREMIERE!

I'm just thrilled with the cast of my newest full-length musical CHRISTMAS IN OZ, which opened tonight at the Chanticleers Theatre. It runs for the next five weeks. How we ever got 25 people onto that tiny stage, I'll never know! I'm as proud of this show as any I've ever written, and I hope that it has a long and healthy life in theatres and schools throughout the country. I never expected to write another holiday show, but sometimes we're not in control of our muses!

10/15/17: ZORGOS AWARDS HONORS...ME?

I'm so touched and humbled to have been selected as an honoree by the Zorgos Project. Zorgos is the Bullying Antidote, and I was humbled to be included in the company of five other awardees, who in my opinion are doing really important work. From the ceremony:

"Ron Lytle's wonderful works of imagination have helped illustrate and unpack the bad behavior of "wicked" characters and model how we can all access goodness. His breakout work, "Oh My Godmother!" and his annual output as resident playwright for East Bay Children's Theatre have made Grimm's fairytales less grim, helping to heal a dark history of European childrearing. All of his works demonstrates character arcs towards virtue and happiness, and each show creates opportunities for positive, inter-generational community experiences. The efforts Ron has made as an artist to release his own talents are a gift to the community and the world, demonstrating the healthy influence of the arts as an endless resource and a powerful primary prevention tool in teaching empathy, hard work, and mastery. "Happily ever after" stories teach optimism and a growth mindset, and Ron brings positivity to the world in delightful abundance with heaps of humor and clever wordplay."

Isn't that nice? Support this terrific organization!

09/13/17: CHRISTMAS IN OZ WORLD PREMIERE

I'm so excited about my new full-length musical, CHRISTMAS IN OZ. It debuts this holiday season at Chanticleers Theatre in Castro Valley, CA. This show began life as a One-Act musical, and it soon became obvious that it was a full show. I never thought I'd write another full length holiday show...and then I did! The four friends from Baum's original are back, alongside new friends like Gidgety-Gadgety, Brigadier Bloop, Santa Claus and a sassy sorceress named Nefariosa.

03/02/17: IT MUST BE...PINOCCHIO

I'll never understand why companies feel that they can simply rename one of my shows. But it happens...a lot. The good people of St. Thomas Playhouse in Sun Valley Idaho are producing a very creative, scaled-down version of IT MUST BE PINOCCHIO, and touring it to elementary schools in the area. It sounds very cool, and I wish I could see it. Hey! Maybe they figured since they're scaling down the show, that they'd scale down the title, too, by dropping the "IT MUST BE." Or maybe the marquees were just too small? ;)

ALADDIN AND THE LAMP opened this morning, kicking off a tour to East Bay schools that goes through April 3rd. 08/10/15: Tickets on sale for "MADCAP MAY!"

More on MADCAP MAY! I've been invited to present a sampling of scenes and songs from the show at the Fall Showcase of New Musicals presented by Musical Cafe in Oakland, CA. My show along with samples from three others will be presented. Since it's just a sneak peak, we're doing 4 (and a half!) songs, plus some abbreviated scenes. There are just six great singing actors and a piano (no cast of hundreds and full orchestra), but it's great fun rehearsing with this talented crew.

The Showcase is two days only: Sept 27 and 28, and traditionally these sell out--so book now if you're local! You can find more info including a link to buy tickets at www.MadcapMay.com. See you there!

07/21/15: Announcing "MADCAP MAY!"

My full-length musical is called MADCAP MAY! and it's based on the life of a truly fascinating woman. May Yohe (rhymes with "showy") was the highest paid stage star of her era. Her personal and professional life was an astonishing series of ups and downs--from marrying an English Lord (and owning the Hope Diamond) to marrying (and shooting) a down-on-his-luck chicken farmer! From being an international headliner to touring in the lowest of vaudeville, before winding up a charwoman. I'll be presenting excerpts from the show as part of a New Works Showcase in September. Details to follow. For now:

I'm not saying that it won *because* of my song. I'm only saying that the other nominees didn't have Lytle Songs in their projects, and look what happened to them...Here's the song, cut in with scenes from the films. Vocal is by my good friend John Erreca.

12/16/12: "THE MAN WHO SAVED CHRISTMAS" has its English Premiere!

Well, sort of...Music from the show has been orchestrated by the amazing Stephen Hearson for a 14-piece orchestra, and is being performed by a great big cast in a jolly holiday show called "Winter Wonderland" in England.

The venue is the truly stunning Victoria Hall, which was constructed to commemorate Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee! It originally seated 2,800 people, but now it "only" holds about 1,600, I think. So if you're near Cheshire, get to Victoria Hall and plunk down a few pounds to see the show...And let me know how good it was, because I'll be home tonight. :-(

The Artistic Staff of The Alcove Theatre (just off Union Square in San Francisco) has invited me to stage an entire evening of my songs in January. I'm really excited about this, as I've wanted to do a revue of my material for quite some time! It's going to be a very varied program, with songs from my shows, non-theatre projects, upcoming projects, trunk songs, and a couple of brand-new pieces written especially for this prodution.

I've got six singers, a very talented trio of musicians, and about 22 songs lined up. We are well into rehearsals, and it looks like the show is going to be fabulous! Come see us at The Alcove Theatre, January 18th and 19th. One weekend only!

It'll be fun for me to see the premiere of this piece, that has been living in the trunk for way too long. I love the song.

06/07/11: Michael J. Fox is joining the cast for the final episode of BACK TO THE FUTURE. I've known about this for quite some time, but was sworn to secrecy. He's not singing my song, of course. This series has been wildly successful, and I'll bet that there will be a second series. Wonder if they'll need more songs???

04/28/11: Back to the studio to record the new BTTF song today. I'm probably not supposed to say what the title of the song is yet...but think "Train". I've heard the scratch track and the arrangement is great. Can't wait to hear the orchestration--and the singer!

03/27/11: How cool to be invited to the producers' party for Richard M. Sherman's new show (pazzazzthemusical.com) and to discuss with him the difficulties of getting producers and theatre companies to take a chance on new shows. I told him, "You think it's hard for Richard Sherman? Try being ME!"

03/24/11: It's offical! I can (at long last!) announce my new musical! It's been killing me to keep mum, but the ink had to dry: THE BRODY BUNCH ON WILLIGAN'S ISLAND is a satirical spin on two well-loved American sitcoms. (Any guesses which two?) This show is going to be an absolute blast, and I am more excited about this project than any other I have ever worked on! The world premiere is taking place in September at Tri-Valley Repertory Theatre. Far out! Stay tuned for more groovy details...

03/06/11: I was able to catch IT MUST BE PINOCCHIO at the Showcase Theatre.  I didn’t like the unathorized changes they made to my script and score, but the cast was talented (the whale was very cool!) and it was still lots of fun to see the show

02/21/11: I just heard the first orchestrations for my new show! (Title to be announced soon...)  They are amazing because my orchestrator, Dan DeLange, is amazingly talented.  He does all the orchestrations at The Goodspeed Opera House and has worked with Jerry Herman, Charles Strouse...and Ron Lytle. The New York Times loves his work, and so do I.
